There is no question about the fact that Nintendo right now is trying to bring in the success of video games to the casual games to the DSi and the Wii. While there are some who might feel very tired with the gaming turn that Nintendo has made within the past year, there are others that are getting a chance to play some really fun titles like Excitebots: Trick Racing and Mario Super Sluggers. But while that seems fine, Nintendo has decided to bring back some very strong titles on its virtual console for the Wii, and in the homes everywhere, that does include fighter games. With the success of Street Fighter 4 on the PS3 and Xbox 360 only, there just really isn’t enough there for Wii owners. Well for them, it is a return of one of the most classic titles from Nintendo’s NES era that is back with a punch. But is this absolutely a knockout, well not completely.
Punch-Out! for the Nintendo Wii, brings back the enjoyment of Nintendo’s original fighter Mac to a whole new generation of gamers. While it has been so long since Little Mac the boxer has been on a Nintendo game, fans have recently taken a new shine on him because of the original game being available on the Wii’s Virtual Console. The gameplay brings in Mac to a whole new era of fans mostly well, but not definitively to capture the audience of fighting fans Nintendo has shown on the Wii with Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Still, Nintendo has shown to bring in the simplicity of the game as a whole to a new generation. As you fight your way to the championship belt, you’ll tackle favorites from the original Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out eras like King Hippo, Von Kaiser, and many others. The graphics have been mastered noblely well, to bring in the classic feel from Nintendo’s Puch-Out glory days, and the gameplay is a delight for hardcore fans.
The control here is a bit mixed in the gameplay. While it works well for the classic fans, and of those who’ve loved Wii Sports, as you can choose to play the game, like you did from the early Punch-Out era, by holding the Wii-mote like the original NES controller, or using the Wii-mote and Nunchuck to bring the boxing appeal in well, like a pair of boxing gloves, using the balance board here from Wii Fit sadly doesn’t give it your all here in the gameplay. Sadly that isn’t the only disadvantage here. I was honestly a bit dissapointed that there could’ve been more in the multiplayer action too, like the ability to play against others online like other fighter games now like Street Fighter 4 and Super Smash Brothers showed well. That limitation doesn’t completely show it as being as universal enough.
All in all, with such a long absence from the eye of Nintendo’s gaming library, Punch-Out!! isn’t as definitive as it could’ve been for a comeback. Even Mario who was in the very original Punch-Out from 1987 would’ve been upset about this. So to be honest with you, if you’re still hungary for a hard core fighting game for the Wii, stick with Super Smash Brothers Brawl instead.

The only person I wanted to punch out after playing this game was the idiot at Nintendo who green lit the Wii project.
As with every other game on the system, the ridiculous controls ruin Punch-Out!! – and I don’t just mean motion controls. Even using the Wiimote in classic NES pad mode, the game is a clunker. Blocking, ducking and dodging is anything but fluid, and coupled with a ridiculous steep difficulty curve, progression is extremely frustrating.
The boxing mini-game in Wii Sports gave me such high hopes for a dedicated motion controlled boxing title. As it is, Punch-Out!! appears to be little more than another nostalgia cash grab from Nintendo. They could tack a shaking mechanism onto anything and it would sell.

I completly hated this game. All you do is the same thing over and over. You just keep verusing the same people but they have nothing harder of them. I know this is a short review but trust me. This game is horrible. I do not recomend it to anyone.

This is a fun game , it picks up where punchout left off and adds some to an already classic formula. However there is not a ton of replayability. I think that just comes with the territory when using a 20 + yr old game engine though, I mean how much could you really one up a donkey kong or supermario brothers game using the same format. Yea you can dress up the graphics and add some new pitfalls, remix the classic music but still you are essentailly playing a 20 year old game. Not that there is a problem with that at all.If you are a Classic Gamer, Nintendo Fanboy or Girl this is a must have for your collection, If you are an XBOX360 Person you will probably find renting this game is probably adaquate.

Punchout was awesome, had great controls and was a fun challenge. Super Punchout had better graphics, far better controls, fair gameplay for once, great fighters and was a great, fun challenge. Punchout Wii is just a poorly controlled cheapfest. The fighters are easy, but the developers just made them cheap/superhuman and gave the player lack luster controls to improve difficulty…that sucks. I think from a controls side, the people who developed the controls here went on to develop controls for Mario wii. Guys Mario and Punchout weren’t about graphics it’s about sharp controls and gameplay which isn’t seen here or in Mario Wii.
