Dragon Age: Origins

  • I was really looking forward to this game, as I am a big fan of all BioWare’s previous work. However, when my copy finally arrived, and I started playing it, I got to a point in the game where I fought some bandit guys and convinced one of them to join my party. As it turns out, this elf guy is some sort of Bi-sexual deviant and proceeded to make sexual advances toward everyone in my party except the dog.(even BioWare won’t go there… yet). So I guess the rampant deviancy that is running wild in the rest of the country is also starting to creep into video games. Shame on you BioWare. So much for escapist entertainment. I’ll be running this disturbing piece of shovelware right down to Gamestop now. Too bad, BioWare used to have a fine product.

  • A friend of mine sold me on this game, after showing me the various preview trailers, game reviews, and whatnot. Upon starting the game, I was immediately struck by how terrible the graphics are. Considering where this game is coming from, it is impossible not to compare to games like Mass Effect, which had astonishing graphics. This game looks like it was made for a PC 10 years ago. The character creation is boring, the startup is slow, and the only really interesting feature of the game, the varying origin stories, requires you to make it through several different character playthroughs. I barely made it through half an hour of play. Don’t buy.

I was expecting so much better. 80+ hours of gameplay sounds exciting until you realize that half of that time will be spent having unenjoyable conversations with characters who stare off into space……even they are bored with this game. The constant conversations that you can’t exit out of supposedly add “depth” to the characters and storyline, but to me they seem to be nothing other than a constant annoyance. When I finally talked to enough people I got to fight some enemies! I was excited for this, but that excitement was short lived. You walk up to an enemy you wish to fight, and press a button to bring your sword down upon him in slow motion and then wait for your character to keep swinging his sword slowly until the enemy is dead. I fought several enemies before getting to fight my first real enemy…..an ogre! I had to run in circles to distract him from killing everyone while my other party members attacked him. That epic battle was less than thrilling. I was hoping for a game with gameplay like Diablo/Baulder’s Gate/Champions of Norrath, or Fable 2, but I was quite dissapointed. The other problem I had with this game was the inventory menu…..it seemed to be unnecessarily difficult to navigate, and the camera angles need to be constantly adjusted in order to see what is going on……I have played RPGs since I was a kid and this seems like most other RPGs of these days where they focus on story and cinematics rather than gameplay…….My main complaint about this game is the combat system…..Overall I would say that this game is quite unenjoyable, and I wish I had rented it or played it first.

  • Not only does this game look terrible but the fight system is horrible. If I wanted to control multiple characters and not just my own i’d go play a RTS. On top of that my character can’t jump. How can the idiots that made this game spend 5 years programing different ways for my cheek bones to look but if I want to hop over a church pew instead of running completely around it I can’t? Super Mario Brothers let me jump, how come twenty years later dragon age origin can’t include that feature? In Morrowind you could jump and fly! I don’t even have to play through a mage character to know if I can’t jump then I surely won’t be able to fly. Do not waste your money on this game. Let it drop in price if you are bored out of your mind enough to want to play it. What a waste of time and money. At least rent it first before you lay down $50.

First impression: 1st 3 hours of play, feels like 2 hours of watching cut scenes and loooong dialogs. If I want a great story, I will read a book, or watch a movie. The developers forgot the fun part of RP games, exploring, development, etc., not fun is watching bad dialog that cannot be escaped.

Finished game mainly to see if it got better. I started getting up and letting the game talk and talk and talk while I went and got a drink, vacuumed, other household chores. Put that in perspective, household chores were more interesting than the 10 minute diatribes that you cannot get around.

Equally bad is the cambat system (if one can say that pressing A repeatedly is a system).

I note that the price is already falling and I predict it will soon be in the $5 bargin pile–though who pays whom is still in question.
